Adding Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D)
If you have Original Medicare and you want Medicare drug coverage, you must join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. These plans are available through private companies that work with Medicare to provide prescription drug coverage.
There are two ways to get Medicare prescription drug coverage:
-
Medicare Prescription Drug Plans 1. These plans (sometimes called “PDPs”) add drug coverage to Original Medicare.
-
Medicare Advantage Plans (like an HMO or PPO) or other 2. Medicare health plans that offer Medicare prescription drug coverage. You get all of your Part A and Part B coverage, including prescription drug coverage (Part D), through these plans. Medicare Advantage Plans with prescription drug coverage are sometimes called “MA-PDs.”
One of the major areas we can help you understand and navigate is the coverage gap or “donut hole” that is part of Medicare Part D. This feature of Medicare is complex and does not lend itself to easy explanation on paper. Medicare.gov does not have a simple explanation either. If you take several medications and you feel they are expense call us so we can review your situation and give you specific information about how the Medciare Part D coverage gap may affect you. We also can give you some ideas on how to avoid or delay the coverage gap.
For more information on Part D, go to page 63 of Medicare and You.
If you have limited income and resources, you may qualify for “extra help” from Medicare paying for prescription drug coverage. You may also be able to get help from your state.
For more information on extra help with Part D cost, go to page 78 of Medicare and You.
